3.0 Class Overview & Doctrine
The Vanguard class — a heavy cruiser descended from the Dreadnought program and perimeter-action lineage: maximum firepower and survivability without giving up an explorer's range.
If the Meridian is the flagship and the Pathfinder the scout, the Vanguard is the ship that holds the line. It is drawn directly from the most aggressive thread in the technical record — the Dreadnought program and the perimeter-action ships of the Class I era — and brings that lineage forward: a three-nacelle heavy cruiser built to absorb punishment and return it, while still carrying the sensors and range to operate as a Starfleet explorer. It is a warship that is unmistakably still a Starfleet ship.

Doctrine
The Vanguard is built for perimeter action — long border and frontier patrols where it may be the only Starfleet vessel in range. Its design priorities, in order, are survivability, firepower, and endurance; speed and luxury come after. The battle bridge and dual hardened computer cores let it keep fighting after damage that would cripple a line explorer.
