2.35 The Federation

Describes the United Federation of Planets as a community of roughly 120 cultures and colony planets, with vast unexplored regions still within its borders.

The United Federation of Planets comprises perhaps 120 different cultures and colony planets, representing a wide variety of life forms. Earth is just one of these. The Federation is, in essence, an alliance of planets working together for their mutual benefit and protection. Even within the boundaries of the space claimed by the Federation are large pockets of unexplored space in which there may well be planets and alien races to be discovered.
