2.27 Communicators

Describes the Starfleet insignia communicator: its activation, range, companels, dermal sensor identification, homing-beacon function, and how it is used.

In brief: The Starfleet insignia on our uniforms also serves as a personal voice communications device. Communicators are activated by touch, as well as by voice. Maximum usable distance is slightly more than transporter range, about 60,000 kilometers. Companels are located throughout the ship, and these are sometimes used instead of one’s personal communicator. Communicators are equipped with a “dermal sensor” which can automatically verify the identify of the person by his or her touch. Communicators also serve as a homing beacon with which the transporter can determine the exact coordinates of a person to be beamed back to the ship.

How to use it: Just tap the badge and verbally indicate who you want to talk to, as in “Janeway to Kim,” or “Paris to Engineering.” The communicator will automatically make the connection.
